I think that's one of those Japanese styling motifs. The closest I can think of on a Western car is the lights on Cadillac, which do sometimes bulge outward in similar fashion. The Germans usually wrap their lights pretty tightly.

I can't deal with them when they go out of their way to do it instead of making it flow with the rest of the lines.

My biggest styling pet peeve, however, is that swoopy line over the rocker panels on German cars that otherwise have straight edges. BMW 1- and 2-series are huge offenders. S-Class as well.
